Helping Seniors Stay Safe at Home With a Little Help from Our Friends

Grant funds from The Myron Stratton Foundation support El Paso County seniors in need of home repairs.

At Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable in their own home—especially our seniors. Thanks to a generous grant from The Myron Stratton Foundation, we’ve been able to make that belief a reality for dozens of older adults across El Paso County.

Now in its third year, our partnership with the foundation has provided a total of $400,000 in funding, allowing us to complete repairs and modifications for 52 households—and counting! In fiscal year 2025 alone, 17 homes received much-needed upgrades that helped their owners stay independent and secure.

The average age of homeowners in the program is 70, and the repairs range from the practical to the transformative. Whether it’s installing grab bars, building ramps, fixing windows, or even converting tubs to showers, these improvements make a big difference. On average, each project costs around $6,000, though some have gone above $10,000—because safety doesn’t come in one-size-fits-all.

Take Betty, for example. At 68, she was dealing with a fence that had seen better days (and a few too many storms). Thanks to the program, she now has a beautiful new cedar fence with sturdy steel posts. “This program was a godsend to me,” Betty shared. “Yes, it’s just a fence, but there was no way I could afford a new one. My yard looks amazing.”

We’re proud to be part of these stories—and grateful to The Myron Stratton Foundation for helping us write them. Here’s to more repairs, more smiles, and more seniors aging safely in place!
