What is the Veterans Build?
Volunteering for Those Who Served
Veterans Build is Habitat for Humanity’s national initiative to provide volunteer, homeownership, and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members, and their families.
As an official Veterans Build Affiliate with Habitat for Humanity International, Pikes Peak Habitat builds, maintains, and preserves homes in partnership with veterans and their families. We’re also committed to seeking more volunteer engagement from veteran groups, as well as recruiting veterans for employment and other service opportunities.
Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build initiative addresses the unique housing challenges faced by those who have served our nation. With over 9,000 veterans and their families assisted since 2013, Veterans Build has become a cornerstone of Habitat’s commitment to supporting military communities.
Breaking Down Barriers to Affordable Housing
Pikes Peak Habitat’s Veterans Build projects represent a comprehensive approach to supporting those who have served our country through meaningful housing solutions. As an official Veterans Build affiliate with Habitat for Humanity International, the organization has made a dedicated commitment to addressing the unique housing challenges faced by military families in El Paso County.
This specialized program goes beyond traditional homeownership opportunities by creating a pathway for veterans to transition successfully from military service to civilian life through stable, affordable housing. Through their specialized programs, Veterans Build provides practical solutions while honoring our military community members.
Current Family
“What I look forward to enjoying in the house is sitting in my backyard, feet up in my little itty bitty swimming pool! Kick back with the lemonade and the straw, and actually make lemon sun tea…”
Willie and Barbara’s journey from homelessness to homeownership exemplifies resilience in the face of housing insecurity. This couple will soon have a safe, accessible Veterans Build home where they can welcome their grandchildren.
For Willie, a U.S. Army veteran, and Barbara, who suffers from health conditions, their new home represents not just comfort but critical health security and the dignity they deserve after years of mutual support and unwavering optimism despite significant challenges.
Words from a Veterans Build Volunteer
“There’s something profoundly meaningful about helping create a safe haven for those who’ve sacrificed so much for our safety. When we dedicated the home last month and watched the veteran family receive their keys, I realized we weren’t just building a house—we were helping restore a sense of belonging they’d earned through their service.”
Helping veterans secure stable housing honors their sacrifice in a tangible way. The moment when a family receives their keys transcends construction—it’s the restoration of dignity. Through Veterans Build projects, Pikes Peak Habitat transforms lumber and nails into the sense of belonging our service members have earned.
