We are in the Christian church calendar season of Lent. Some of us use this time to give up a favorite food or past time, others spend more time than usual being aware of spiritual presence or have dedicated time of reflection. I am asking us all to consider the act of tithing. No, not the usual concept of monetary tithing, but of tithing in a different currency– the currency of kindness.
We are extremely fortunate to be members of the Habitat community, as this community is based on lifting others up. Just look at all of you who choose to spend your weekend celebrating with another Habitat family’s home dedication! As a community, you all here naturally “tithe” kindness.
What a better world this will be if we all become deliberate in tithing kindness not just to others but to ourselves as well. What does 10 percent of dedicating your day to kind acts look like? How about stretching that 10 percent, as there isn’t a limit. What happens if we deliberately set our daily kindness tithe to 25%, 50% or 100%? Yes, 100% all in a day!
We are blessed to be part of the Habitat community – a community that naturally tithes kindness. Now, together, let us raise our kindness tithing percentage daily.
In Kindness,
Kris Lewis
