This Saturday, you can bring old, unwanted, and unused paint to Sand Creek High School for free recycling — and help Pikes Peak Habitat and GreenSheen Paint keep usable materials out of landfills!
Whether you’re a local homeowner who found a few leftover cans in your new garage or a Realtor cleaning out multiple residences, you can bring paint in original, non-leaking, labeled containers. Sample sizes, as well as one- to five-gallon containers, are accepted. Recyclable materials include
- oil-based, acrylic, and latex paints
- stains
- shellacs
- lacquers
- sealers
- varnishes
- urethanes.
“We’re thrilled to offer this opportunity to El Paso County,” says Jeff White, Pikes Peak Habitat chief programs officer. “Last year, the ReStores saved 17,575 gallons of paint from landfills through our recycling programs, and we hope this event makes paint recycling accessible to even more people.”
Both ReStore locations — Northeast, 6250 Tutt Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80923; and South, 411 S. Wahsatch Ave., Colorado Springs 80903 — accept paint for recycling, limiting quantities to five gallons per customer per day. If you have a larger quantity of paint, though, the event this Saturday might be perfect for you: Drop it all off at one time!
Paint will be recycled into GreenSheen’s eco-friendly latex paints, which are carried at the ReStore South, among other retail locations. To date, GreenSheen — which was co-founded by a military veteran — has kept about 20 million pounds of paint out of landfills.
Spray paint, paint thinners, solvents, cleaning agents, adhesives, roof patch materials, drywall mud, driveway sealer, automotive paints, and other hazardous wastes will not be accepted.
We do suggest reserving a time to drop off your paint in order to facilitate a smooth process. There’s no charge to bring paint, although financial donations for Pikes Peak Habitat will be accepted. When you drop off your paint, you’ll receive a donation receipt with a coupon for the Pikes Peak ReStores.
Thanks for helping us responsibly steward our resources and give new life to usable materials!
