Celebrating Our Veterans Today
Happy Veterans Day! Pikes Peak Habitat is grateful to our veterans for their service and for their ongoing contributions to our community.
Read on to learn about some of the ways we're celebrating and supporting veterans -- our 5th Veterans Build home dedication, this month's book club focus on veterans, and our Gingerbread Home Build to support our 6th Veterans Build.
In addition, our home repair program provides critical repairs to veterans, as well as seniors and others who are cost-burdened.
We also recognize our volunteers who are veterans. We know that many of you continue to serve your community even after your military services ends, and we appreciate your time, energy, and passion in supporting affordable homeownership here in El Paso County!

5th Veterans Home Build Dedicated
On Saturday, Nov. 9 -- just in time for Veterans Day! -- we welcomed Army veteran Damian, his wife Trinady, and their twins to their new home at The Ridge at Sand Creek! Because of the snowstorm earlier in the week and ongoing road conditions, we held a small, private ceremony for their family and friends inside the home, rather than the public home dedication originally planned. Video will be posted later this week, so you can celebrate with them in spirit. Stay tuned to our website and social media channels for links!
We're thrilled to be able to thank Damian for his service by partnering with his family so they can purchase an affordable home--our 5th Veterans Build.
Through a joint Building Community program between The Home Depot Foundation, Habitat for Humanity International, and Home Builders Institute (HBI), Pikes Peak Habitat was awarded $158,000 for the home. As part of this program, Pikes Peak Habitat partnered with HBI students from Fort Carson, who helped build the home and received on-the-job skilled trades training. Their contributions will be recognized at the home dedication.

Join Our November Book Club Discussion
Our next book club discussion is Thursday, Nov. 14, 7-8:30 p.m. on Zoom. We'd love to have you join us!
In honor of Veterans Day and our 5th Veterans Build home dedication Nov. 9, we’re reading The Women by Kristin Hannah. This New York Times bestselling author’s novel follows a woman who serves as a nurse in Vietnam, then returns home to a divided country, where her service is often both unacknowledged and unappreciated.
Registration Opens for Gingerbread Home Build
It's that time of year again! Registration for our 2024 Gingerbread Home Build is now open! This event raises funds to help build an affordable home for Willie and Barbara, our 6th Veterans Build family.
Willie is a U.S. Army veteran who was stationed at Fort Carson during his service and also is the son of a Korean War veteran. Barbara’s father served in Vietnam. Both also have siblings who are veterans – so they have deep military ties.
Between them, Willie and Barbara are the parents of eight children (four apiece!) and 29 grandchildren. They look forward to having enough space to host family when they move into their Pikes Peak Habitat home.
“We look at our blessings ahead, and nothing can stop us!” says Willie. “We have a goal, and we can see it.”
They're excited to decorate their own gingerbread home and also to see the many creative entries from other individuals, families, and organizations!

Families Celebrate Halloween with Pumpkin Carving
Despite snow and rain, current and future homeowners spent time outside on Wednesday, Oct. 30, carving pumpkins! Amber, our homeowner services manager, planned the event at The Ridge at Sand Creek to bring together families in the neighborhood and those who will soon be joining them. Participants got to choose their pumpkins and create their designs -- then decorate their homes with them! One homeowner shared that this is the first Halloween she has been able to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
